Setting it as a 8-way hat switch provides 16 functions with the shift key. By default, the pinky finger on the left hand controller is the shift key. However, you can reprogram any key to function as the shift key.The only reason that I don't give this controller a five star rating is because they seem to die after a few years. I've owned two and both have gone bad. Just stopped working. I may buy a third if I can't find anything better. There are several left hand keypads that look good but I have not found another mouse with a 4-way hat switch. I love the functionality the hat switch on the mouse gives me.
